Valuable hardwoods such as mahogany, ebony, walnut and rosewood grow in Mexico as well as oak, pine, fir and the cacao tree whose nuts provide the base for chocolate.Mexico has over thirty thousand flowering plants including frangipani, magnolia, bougainvillea and orchids. The cactus is the plant which most people associate with Mexico.Mexico has diverse plant life that includes lush jungles, harsh desert and high-altitude oak and pine forests. The ahuehuete or Mexican bald cypress is the national tree of Mexico and is known for its longevity and tall massive shape.The Usumacinta River begins in the Highlands of Guatemala and flows northward through Mexico to the Gulf. In this watershed grows one of the largest rain forests in the Americas.Then, there is the majestic ceiba, which is one of the tallest trees in the region. Its distinctive flat-topped crown stands high above the rest of the forest and provides a micro-environment for numerous hanging plants, birds, animals and insects.
